I found that if you pull the belt all the way out and give a soft cloth a good squirting with something like armour all or similar dressing agent and then run the belt the whole length with the (armour all treated) cloth clasped each side between finger and thumb several times it puts a light coating on and makes the belt more flexible and easier to retract.
I have never suffered any rot or problems with MOT doing this.
