Update RE: [Peugeot-L] Sudden Clutch hydraulic leak - slave cyl? - 84 505GL

Hello,

OnOnThanks to Bob Bruce, Mike Aube, Jurgen and Rob Courter for quick replies to my post a couple of hors ago

I went down and had a look, and the slave cyl was dripping from the dust cover. The lever going into the bellhousing and the pushrod both look OK. Took the slave cylinder off and pulled the piston out; the rubber cup has some wear marks on the side, there's some marks on the inside of the bore but it feels smooth. There was some crud in the bottom of the cylinder which I wiped out - the sort of sludge that accumulates over the years (especially in a moist climate, I suppose).

Which makes me wonder why it leaked so much and so suddenly? I've had slave cylinders go on other cars (not Peugeot) and usually the pedal gets mushy and the gears won't change - a gradual thing not all of a sudden. In this case, there was no "warning" in the feel of the pedal. Although I think it had been seeping a bit for a while, it looked a bit wet when I was under the car two weeks ago doing other stuff, but there's some oil drips and everything is a bit damp down there - has been for a couple years - so I didn't worry about it.

Maybe the piston got a bit sideways and allowed the fluid to leak out? Seems a bit unlikely, bit I wonder.

What do you look for as wear indicators on the inside of the cylinder bore? There's no pitting in the part where the piston moves.

You're in Vancouver, home of ALTROM, my supplier for clutch master and slave cylinders. It is recommended to replace both. You can buy from them through UAPNAPA if that's easier.

Hello,

Yesterday morning all was fine with my 505, then in the afternoon when I go to start the car the clutch pedal goes straight to the floor, the brake fluid reservoir is low, and there's a puddle under the car. It seems weird that the leak happened all of a sudden, but conveniently it is in the garage where I can get at it.

I am about to go down and have a look - suspect blown seals in the slave cylinder, or maybe something with the fork (did a search and I have seen a few posts about both).

Has anyone had luck finding a cross-reference for the seals, as a backup in case the local FLAPS doesn't have a slave cylinder rebuild kit for an '84 505?

More to come... I will post what I find and what the solution was

thanks
