Ian,

The most likely cause of your clutch slave cylinder failure was water content in the brake fluid. Unfortunately brake fluid pulls water right out of the air... get enough water in there... add a freeze and you have a problem.

I routinely drain and refill the brake fluid (per Peugeot specs) once a year. I also ONLY use Castrol GTLMA brake fluid (LMA = Low Moisture Activity). This too is a Peugeot spec (see the yellow tag on the firewall next to the brake booster). Over the 30+ years of working on Peugeots, I've found that using ANYTHING else results in premature seal failure...
