Well,. I hope it is all done.
Thought I would write up the results for "closure" and to provide some info
for the next lister who has similar trouble and does a subject search for
"slave" looking for answers.
I lucked out and got a rebuild kit (cup and dust cover) for $14 Canadian, in
stock at Lordco, a regional FLAPS in Western Canada.
It was a Beck/Arnley 071-4253
Honed out the cylinder a bit as it was rough at the closed end, and I didn't
want to tear the new seal when the piston was pushed back on initial
install.
I found out what the unique bleeding process is on these: open the clutch
slave bleeder, then a front brake bleeder (usually the left front - it is
closest), connect them with a hose, then gently pump the BRAKES...this pumps
fluid into the clutch slave and fills the clutch hydraulics from the bottom.
Because the bleeder is on the top of the slave cylinder, conventional
bleeding does not work too well. In my case, the bleeder on the left front
caliper was shorn off, so I used the right side caliper, and a long hunk of
hose that was originally for windshield washer fluid (cannibalized from a
60's American sedan... lots of under-hood distance to cover in those!)
The whole reassembly and bleeding process was done in a couple of hours, in
between running other seasonal errands, and with the help of an adult
neighbour and my 9 year old son who loves getting underneath Dad's Peugeot
(once it is securely standing on a par of 3 ton jack stands).
Thanks again to everyone for their assistance and advice,

Subject: Update RE: [Peugeot-L] Sudden Clutch hydraulic leak - slave cyl? -
84 505GL
Hello,
Thanks to Bob Bruce, Mike Aube, Jurgen and Rob Courter for quick replies to
my post a couple of hors ago
I went down and had a look, and the slave cyl was dripping from the dust
cover. The lever going into the bellhousing and the pushrod both look OK.
Took the slave cylinder off and pulled the piston out; the rubber cup has
some wear marks on the side, there's some marks on the inside of the bore
but it feels smooth. There was some crud in the bottom of the cylinder
which I wiped out - the sort of sludge that accumulates over the years
(especially in a moist climate, I suppose).
Which makes me wonder why it leaked so much and so suddenly? I've had slave
cylinders go on other cars (not Peugeot) and usually the pedal gets mushy
and the gears won't change - a gradual thing not all of a sudden. In this
case, there was no "warning" in the feel of the pedal. Although I think it
had been seeping a bit for a while, it looked a bit wet when I was under the
car two weeks ago doing other stuff, but there's some oil drips and
everything is a bit damp down there - has been for a couple years - so I
didn't worry about it.
Maybe the piston got a bit sideways and allowed the fluid to leak out?
Seems a bit unlikely, bit I wonder.
What do you look for as wear indicators on the inside of the cylinder bore?
There's no pitting in the part where the piston moves.
thanks,

You're in Vancouver, home of ALTROM, my supplier for clutch master and slave
cylinders. It is recommended to replace both. You can buy from them through
UAPNAPA if that's easier.

Hello,
Yesterday morning all was fine with my 505, then in the afternoon when I go
to start the car the clutch pedal goes straight to the floor, the brake
fluid reservoir is low, and there's a puddle under the car.
It seems weird that the leak happened all of a sudden, but conveniently it
is in the garage where I can get at it.
I am about to go down and have a look - suspect blown seals in the slave
cylinder, or maybe something with the fork (did a search and I have seen a
few posts about both).
Has anyone had luck finding a cross-reference for the seals, as a backup in
case the local FLAPS doesn't have a slave cylinder rebuild kit for an '84
505?
More to come... I will post what I find and what the solution was
thanks
