It is an air valve that is controled by temperature which picks the air source for the air filter
When cold it selects warm air from engine (exhaust pipe) stove
when warm it selects air from the air intake beside the rad behind the grille

Subject: [Peugeot-L] Identifying a component and it's function - 505 V6
Hi all, I wanted to know about a certain component on my V6 motor. Let me try to describe it: Just before the air filter box is another plastic sort of Y shaped box with a plastic flap and what looks like a temperature or some other type of sensor. It has an aluminium flex-hose (at least what's left of it) on the other end What is it, and what does it do? If it had a huge hole melted in the side (as mine does) and make it completely ineffective would it affect the performance of the car? (I'm still desperately trying to find the source of my poor low rpm idle).
Thanks in advance,
Thomas
