OnDo you have the book for the engine?
I would absolutely torque the head bolts first thing then adjust the
valves while in there. There is something about the head bolts that
threw me for a while. One of the Peugeot mechanics will chime in and
let you know which bolts can re-torqued. I worried fro a short while
tried to figure which ones were on our 1981 505s td then just did it.
The massive amount of white smoke on starting also went away as did
the expansion of the coolant lines, of course I had to replace the
radiator fan switch which kicked off the whole affair. Compared to the
head gasket replacement job I was beginning to think I was in for, the
re-torque was a snap.
I don't know how much coolant was leaking out because I bought the 505
with the mechanic's diagnosis that it needed a head gasket, my guess
is, like your car it was blowing coolant through the head gasket too.
Do it before it gets worse
