8-08-05 - Piston Ring Gapping

I recieved my parts back from the machine shop yesterday. Everything looks beautiful and i'm happy to get this project on the road again. I took my time tonight gapping the oem replacement rings made by Deves as suggested by the insert. The rings were very slightly oversized so the gaps were a little bit too small for my cylinders. So i got out the feeler gauges and the file and took several hours to do some precision work! The piston rings were placed in their cylinders one by one and squared (aligned) to the cylinder with the top of a piston inserted through the top of the bore. They were then checked and filed as needed until the gaps just barely passed the minimum requirement. This was the first time i've ever done piston ring gapping and it went really well. I think the first ring took about 40 minutes since i was a little sheepish with the file. After a couple more rings i had no problem breezing through the rest. I did my best to keep the ring gaps square and not 'pie' shaped, and they did turn out very well in the end. I had no special tools to do this, just patience, a file, and my feeler gauges. After all the ring gaps were set, the pistons got mated to their respective rings and bagged for now.

More soon!
