Removing the Steering wheel is not necessary, but it may make the job easier. Start by inserting your pick (or whatever sharp object you've selected to use) into each dimple on the side middle of the instrument cluster. While holding pressure inwards, pull on each side of the cluster until it's separated from the dash.
Next you'll need to remove all the electrical plugs. They are mostly all color coated, but no need to remember where which one went, each plug only has one location so there's no way to get confused as to where it went when hooking the cluster back up.

Remove the rubber trip meter reset button cover by gently working it of the plastic shaft it's connected to. |
|
Now that we have the cluster removed, we want to separate the cluster it self from the clear plastic cover and housing:
With your flathead screwdrivers, release all 8 tabs on the top and the bottom of the cluster.

Remove the black electrical tape covering the ribbon leading into the tachometer. Then remove the ribbon from the tachometer. |
|
Remove:
- 8 Silver #2 Phillips screws
- 2 #2 Phillips speedometer screws
- 9 5.5mm copper colored nuts
- 9 (5.5mm sized) washers under the nuts
|
|
Now, GENTLY and EVENLY separate the white plastic housing from the 3 main gauges including the black front plate. This step requires some patients. You should be able to separate it without doing any prying. If needed, you could gently help the 9 studs. If there is still, resistance make sure you have all screws out, the rubber trip meter reset knob off, and the tach ribbon is out as well ;) |

You'll need to remove the needles from whatever you want separate before removing. These needles are NOT keyed, so its important to remember the position they were in prior to removal!
I usually use 2 small flathead screwdrivers to pry the needles off. This has GOT to be done evenly, as you don't want to be removing them at and angle which may bend some internal parts...

Each item is pressed onto a rubber nipple which can be removed by gently prying. I'm removing the speedometer which has a small metal band as well as the rubber nipples. This can be removed by pushing on the top of the band, and / or using a small flathead screwdriver. |

If you are reading this procedure for info on how to re-calibrate your tachometer, this pot is the one your looking for. I like to drill a hole in the bottom of the white plastic casing so it can be adjusted without having to remove and disassemble the whole cluster. |
Reinstallation is as simple as reversing the procedure show above. It may also be a good time to check all your instrument cluster warning bulbs, as well as clean any of the electrical plugs / connections on the back of the cluster.
After re-connecting all the electrical connections to the back of the cluster, try to tidy up all the wires and remove as much slack as possible. Long wires can interfere with trying to seat the cluster into the dash which can cause problems.
When re-installing, be sure both sides of the cluster are seated properly. |
