While I was looking for an actuator to use, I had people telling me they were
all the same, and that there was no way I could find one with a stiffer internal spring. So I start looking around, see pretty quickly find Garrett actuators with stiffer internal springs made for a Ford Sierra Cosworth RS, and even some aftermarket actuators with replaceable springs for adjusting just how much boost you want to run.
The two I was looking at were the Garrett -34, and -31. I couldn't find any official documentation on the differences between these actuators, so I decided to buy a used -34 from a fellow eBay'er from the UK, and test it for myself.
There is some discussion regarding these actuators here:

The actuator showed up, and supposedly only had 200 miles on it or something, so I was really happy. This is supposed to be the stiffer of the 2, but just how stiff IS the spring?
To give you an idea, the actuator that comes on the 86-91 505 turbo engines lifts at 5psi (when I say lift, I mean the pressure when the rod starts to move out of the actuator body, and open the wastegate). After getting this actuator on the bench, I quickly learned it -lifted- at a MUCH higher pressure rate, 14psi! Now I'm still not exactly sure about the ratio between the initial wastegate opening and the manifold pressure. I'm guessing with this unit installed, the wastegate would be fully opened at around 16-19psi (minimum), which is more boost then I want to be running (for now at least).
I just bought a NEW Garrett -31 actuator from a shop in the UK, so we'll see how that compares. I'm imagining that one will be perfect, fingers crossed....
