This was a big decision. Due to the 505 turbo exhaust manifold not being compatible with anything else, there really wasn't much flexability. I could either get a complete exhaust manifold and downpipe made and go with some new style Garrett GT28, or try to find something to work with the stock setup. I did a fair amount of calling around, and finally found someone who was willing to work with me on this....
After talking to a few people, they all said the stock N9TEA turbo (A/R .48) would max out around 250hp. I always thought that "yeah that turbo can do about XXhp" was total crap. There are so many other variables to making HP. Like using a massive turbo capable of 1200hp with a restrictive intake and exhaust, will it still make 1200hp? In any case, we were maxing out at about 250hp with the stock turbo. Fuel additive and 21psi boost? Yeah, we aren't putting down 275hp hmmmmmmm. Anyway, I was telling people I wanted to shoot for 300hp, so this is what they gave me:
Stock exhaust housing with some porting, and a "
stage 1.5" turbine from a mid 80's Mercedes turbo diesel. The housing isn't large enough for a stage II turbine, so there was my limitations. A new cartridge was also installed, as well as a T04 compressor housing. I was told this should make 300hp no problem, so we'll see.....
